Many social conservatives have come out against gay marriage, Steven N. Goings insists they're doing themselves a disfavor. Rather than shunning gays, he writes, religious types need to appreciate queer courage and make room in the congregations for same-sex lovers. Have you ever stopped to consider the moral courage it takes for gays and lesbians to [...]

We're gagging! Indiana's Democratic party has been taking a page from the right. While most of this electoral season's anti-gay rhetoric has come from the Republicans, the Hoosier State's Democrats decided to get nasty with a mailer sent out for state Representative Andy Schemenaur. Good news for all your queer Connecticut love birds! Now that the state's Supreme Court has given the green light to gay marriage, lawyers and their ilk are making all the preparations necessary to getting same-sex nuptials up and running: A lawyer involved in the case say paperwork will delay any actual ceremonies until next month. From The Editor: I've known Sam Jackson for about eight years, since my freshman year at Vassar, where his daughter Zoe also matriculated. Thus, this bit of news is especially personal for me - the actor, who's a doll, spent some of his precious time yesterday recording a radio ad urging voters to vote "no" [...]

The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that the homes of two Prop 8 supporters were vandalized Sunday night.

The homeowners, Tom and Kelly Byrne and Frank and Evalina Ybarra, had "Yes on 8, Protect Marriage" signs posted on their front lawns on Southgate Court for about a week. The Byrnes and Ybarras, friends who live across from each other on the small cul-de-sac, had their garage doors spray-painted in large letters with the words "No on 8."

I'm sure that whoever did this was A) well intentioned and B) mightely pissed off.

I get the pissed off part.  I've been pissed off about the whole marriage thing since the late John Singer and I sued for the right to marry back in 1971.  I've been pissed off about that and about every one of my brothers and sisters who have been ridiculed, spat on, chased, beaten, raped, stabbed, shot, burned alive, hung on a fence to die, or any of the other myrid obscenities which have come their way in the intervening 37 years.

More after the fold...

I've been there.  In that same year, 1971, I and a bunch of other young queers drove John's van, festooned with great big signs along both sides proclaiming "Gay Liberation Now!" and "Faggots Against Fascism" across the rear doors from Seattle to the university in Madison, Wisconsin where we attended one of the early national queer organizing events.  We went through quite a few of those red states everyone is talking about lately.

A few years later I had to grab my shotgun to chase away a gang of baseball bat wielding thugs who showed up at my door to show me "what we do to fags in this neighborhood."

Another time I was cornered by two young toughs who declared "We're going to beat the shit out of you, faggot."  I didn't see that I had any choice as they were blocking the exit. so  I rolled up my sleeves and told them "Maybe you will, but you are going to have to work harder at it than anything you've ever worked at in your life before.  Let's do it."  They looked at each other then turned and walked away.  Would I have won that fight if they had decided to stay?  Naw, no way.  But damned if I was going to go down without a fight.

So yes.  I know pissed, and I know scared.  And I know how that combination makes us want to just blindly lash out.  But I also know that blindly lashing out is a piss poor strategy  when it comes to winning hearts and minds.  And winning those hearts and minds is job number one between now and November 4th if we don't want to see the struggle for marriage equality get set back for decades.

So for those who don't understand, here it is.  We are all Americans.  As Barack says, "There is no red America, or blue America, there is only The United States of America" and in the United States of America we don't commit violence against our neighbors.  And when we see wrong we speak up.

So listen up and I will speak very clearly.  There is a big difference between standing up for yourself as compared to sneaking out under the cover of darkness to deface someone's property and by so doing strip away their ability to feel secure in their own homes.  It's wrong when it's done to us, and it is just as wrong when we do it to others. So stop it!

If you want to support this struggle for marriage equality, fine.  There is a lot of work that needs to be done between now and next Tuesday.  But if you just want to run around and play urban junior terrorist - No. that doesn't help to stop Prop 8 any more than Ashley Todd's self-mutilation helped the McCain campaign.  We are better than that.

ps: Go read this.

The I'm not sh*tting you quote of the day:
"People say to me, oh jeez, he's 72 and he's got skin cancer. I can tell you he's been in remission for eight years. Secondly, I talked -- because I get asked this question so much -- I talked to doctors and insurance actuaries. And they tell me based on McCain's age, his health, including skin cancer, he'll live till at least 85. And probably longer. I believe that he'll be able to serve through his first term for which he's elected, please God."
-- McCain toady Joe Lieberman, apparently not thrilled at the idea of a Bible Spice ascension to the presidency

As you know, Bible Spice recently told Daddy D that she supports a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. When Mike Signorile opened his lines on his Sirius OutQ radio show to see what support is still out there in the gay community for McCain/Palin, a caller in Colorado, Mike, rationalized why Palin made the ticket complete for him:

Seriously, could the number of gay Republicans supporting McCain/Palin fit in a clown car at this point? It's a clearly anti-gay ticket, and I'm sorry but McCain's promise of low taxes for everyone one of the main reasons for LCRs for supporting the nominee, is patently not true.
