Combined Gay News Headlines (T5T-1)

Sarah Palin attempted to squash sartorial criticism this weekend when she told a crowd her favorite store's a consignment shop, not fancy stores like the ones the RNC patronized when picking her campaign duds. We're not sure if the comment changed any minds about Palin's $150,000 wardrobe, but it spurred CBS Early Show's crack team [...]

Thankfully this stupendously heinous plot didn't get very far, as two neo-Nazis not only planned to take out Barack Obama, but had dreams of going postal on black students (setting a target figure of 102).
This undated photo obtained from a MySpace webpage shows Daniel Cowart, 20 of Bells, Tenn. holding a weapon. He and Paul Schlesselman 18, of West Helena, Ark. are being held without bond.

Two white supremacists allegedly plotted to go on a national killing spree, shooting and decapitating black people and ultimately targeting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal authorities said Monday.

In all, the two men whom officials describe as neo-Nazi skinheads planned to kill 88 people - 14 by beheading, according to documents unsealed in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

The spree, which initially targeted an unidentified predominantly African-American school, was to end with the two men driving toward Obama, "shooting at him from the windows," the court documents show.

"Both individuals stated they would dress in all white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt," the court complaint states. "Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt."

...Until his arrest, Cowart lived with his grandparents in a southern, rural part of the county, Taylor said, adding that Cowart apparently never graduated from high school. He moved away, possibly to Arkansas or Texas, then returned over the summer, Taylor said.

For better or worse, gun shows are a staple of American culture, especially conservative American subculture.  Yesterday, a boy of merely 8 years of age accidentally killed himself while firing an Uzi submachine gun.

An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, police Lt. Lawrence Vallierpratte said.

Police said the boy, Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Conn., was with a certified instructor and called the death a "self-inflicted accidental shooting."

The horrible scene played out much as you or I might imagine--the backfire of the gun was too much for the youngster to handle, and the weapon flipped up, sending a bullet into the young child's head.  (The backfire in an Uzi due to its open-bolt design is an oft-cited criticism against the gun.  The fact that anyone would allow a child to even touch this sort of gun should deprive someone of any right to own or fire such a weapon himself.)

Where were the parents during all of this?  The child's father was standing behind him the entire time.  And in another matter of grotesque irony:

The father, Charles Bizilj, is the medical director of emergency medicine at Johnson Memorial Hospital, in Stafford Springs, Conn.

A senseless tragedy brought on by senseless parenting.  What will it take to stop these sorts of mindless and completely unnecessary gun-related accidents?

"Federal prosecutors in Tennessee have charged two men with plotting a "killing spree" against African-Americans that would have been capped with an attempt to kill Democratic presidential candidate Sen. We knew it was coming and now it's hear: childbearing trans man Thomas Beatie finally published his memoir, the appropriately entitled Labor of Love: The Story of One Man’s Extraordinary Pregnancy. California Senator Barbara Boxer today sent a letter to supporters urging them to vote "no" on Proposition 8: "Prop 8 will eliminate rights. Those are the facts. Awww, actor Dustin Milligan's an absolutely contrite doll! Milligan, whom some of you may recognize as the heartthrob Ethan on 90210, once recorded some sort of video in which he described Elvis as the "king of homos," which obviously isn't true. Everyone knows that's Elton. Anyway, Milligan's given the joke some thought and now feels [...]

Like right-wing nut job Janet Porter before them, James Dobson's Focus On The Family are predicting what the States will look like after four years of of an Obama administration. "Law enforcement agencies reported a slight decrease in hate crimes last year, despite an increase against gays and lesbians. The FBI reported more than 7,600 hate crime incidents in 2007, down about 1 percent from last year. Racially motivated hate crimes accounted for more than half of that total. Religious bias was the second-leading motive [...]
We never quite know what to make of these stories… Australian researchers have found suggestive evidence that transgender identities are genetic. From the BBC: DNA analysis from 112 male-to-female transsexual volunteers showed they were more likely to have a longer version of the androgen receptor gene. The genetic difference may cause weaker testosterone signals, the team reported in [...]

Amy Winehouse is back! The more tragic (and British) version of Britney Spears has had an exciting past few days, including a bad move with London police and a trip to rehab, kinda. Things aren't looking so good for John McCain in New Hampshire, where he once stood strong: Fergus Cullen, the state GOP chairman, was trying to put the best possible face on a bleak political landscape here, when he said over lunch on Thursday, "McCain's doing his job keeping it competitive here in New Hampshire." Some California parents are royally - and understandably - pissed at the Yes on 8 campaign. The campaign, which hopes to revoke gay citizens' right to marry, recently ran the above ad in which they again claim that same-sex nuptials will infiltrate the public school system. And to prove their point, the commercial's creators used [...]
