Combined Gay News Headlines (T5T-1)

As we head into Oscar weekend, with promises of Oscar-gold for the critically acclaimed Milk, we thought we'd head to the other end of the spectrum and introduce you to the worst gay movie of all time, 2002's Ben & Arthur. This isn't some random opinion of ours like we usually foist on you; B&A [...]
It's that time of the week, when Queerty takes a break from the opinion-making and puts you, the readers, in charge. Each Friday, we invite you to be the pundit on a hot-button question facing the LGBT community and its allies. As always, we expect people to be respectful and considerate of others by refraining [...]
Last week it happened again. I was at a dinner party at The Standard, downtown L.A.'s hipster-by-way-of-Ikea boutique hotel and what was originally supposed to be an intimate group of four had become, by the time I showed up fashionably late, a massive table of sixteen, thanks to the hostess. The Hostess is of a [...]
If you’ll direct your eyeballs over to the right side of the page you’ll see a bunch of links. Most of which you’ve likely never clicked before, so perhaps you’ll not notice the difference. That’s right, there’s a new social club in town dedicated to bringing together women for social events and meet ups. The group has grown tremendously in just the past few weeks and they have a slew of fun and unique events lined up. They had a great showing just this last Tuesday at Girls Night Out at [...]
Some of the suits in the Pepsi boardroom must not have a problem being associated with the racism, misogyny and homophobia that spews daily from the lips of Michael Savage. (Advocate):
PepsiCo announced Wednesday morning a multiyear distribution deal with the makers of the energy drink Rockstar, prompting calls among gay rights activists for a company-wide boycott.

Rockstar was co-created by Dr. Michael Weiner, better known as conservative radio host Michael Savage, who has often broadcast antigay tirades, referring to gay callers as "sodomites" who should "get AIDS and die."

His equally conservative wife, Janet, serves as the company's CFO, while his son Russell -- cofounder of the Paul Revere Society, which campaigns for the deportation of all illegal immigrants -- serves as the CEO.

Perhaps this move by the soft drink giant is to make amends with the bigot crowd at Don Wildmon's shop. PepsiCo had recently donated hefty sums to HRC and P-FLAG.

Hero of the day. Governor Jim Doyle, drew praise and fire for his speech today on his budget proposal to offer limited domestic partnership protections for the state's same-sex couples. (Fox 11):
Under the plan state employees would also get health insurance coverage extended to domestic partners.

"I just think we should be fair about this-the University of Wisconsin is the only Big 10 University that does not have benefits for domestic partnerships and that means we're at a competitive disadvantage," said Governor Doyle.

Those who oppose the measure say the state has more pressing things to deal with.

"In a time of financial crisis like we're facing as a state, our governor is simply not paying attention to the fiscal priorities of our state. Instead he's sneaking in a really radical social agenda and we find that unfortunate, and probably very dangerous for the state," said Julaine Appling with Wisconsin Family Action.

Fair Wisconsin applauded the governor's proposal, which many say flies in the face of the state's marriage amendment.
Fair Wisconsin applauds Gov. Jim Doyle for including limited domestic partnership protections for the state's same-sex couples in his biennial budget proposal.  The proposed domestic partnerships will grant basic protections to same-sex couples in caring, committed relationships, including hospital visitation and the ability to take Family Medical Leave to care for a sick partner.

"This is an important step toward ensuring that someone in a committed relationship is able to care for his or her partner," said Glenn Carlson, Executive Director of Fair Wisconsin.  "No one should ever have to worry about being blocked at their partner's hospital room door, or have to make the heartbreaking decision to quit their job in order to care for a seriously ill partner.  This isn't about being gay or straight-it's about being decent."

"We commend Gov. Doyle for his leadership on this issue," Carlson continued.  "We look forward to working with legislators to make sure that this fair-minded budget is passed quickly."

...To be eligible for a domestic partnership, two individuals must be of the same sex, both be at least 18 years old, share a common residence, not be nearer of kin than second cousins, and neither party can be married or in another domestic partnership with anyone else.  Domestic partnerships will be administered at the county level, and couples must sign a legal declaration of their commitment.

Holy mother of man-on-dog. How did this man get elected to the U.S. Senate? Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) was invited to give a lecture on Islam at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As Think Progress noted, Little Ricky pontificated that "the American public knows too little about the Islamic faith" and then said this:
"A democracy could not exist because Mohammed already made the perfect law," Santorum said. "The Quran is perfect just the way it is, that's why it is only written in Islamic."
Islam is not a language. The Quran was, of course, written in Arabic.
