Feature Story:
In many ways, movies are the heart and soul of America, our most widely shared cultural moments played out on the silver screen. We're a nation where everyone can recite the plot of Star Wars, recognize the theme from Jaws, marvel at the twist-ending of The Sixth Sense.
While gay characters and stories took a long time to join that national consciousness of flickering images, our community boasts a cinematic soul of sorts -- stories and characters who have given us a shared experience that helped shape us and support us.
Milk is this year's latest gay Oscar bait, but while you await the roll out of the red carpet, here's a list of GLBT films that everyone should see. Or, in the case of movie maniacs - yes, like us - revisit often (thank heaven for Netflix). From uplifting to tragic, comedic to dramatic, these 25 films reflect the heart and history of a community. ...more

Gauge: Washington is fighting three cities -- Boston, Cleveland and Miami -- in its bid to host the 2014 Gay Games, the world's largest GLBT sports and culture event. It's a fight Brent Minor wants to win.
To that end, Minor, chair of the 2014 Washington DC Gay Games Bid Committee, urges likeminded enthusiasts to join him Saturday morning, Feb. 21, for a rally in support of the bid.
''It's basically a chance for people to come and learn more about our bid to host the Gay Games in 2014, to meet some of the leadership of the games, and for us to demonstrate to the world how committed we are as a city and as a community to bringing the games to Washington,'' says Minor, who also serves as president of Team DC, a volunteer-based organization that encourages members of the GLBT community to get involved with sports by supporting local teams and athletes. ...more

Gauge: It's simple, says Councilmember David Catania (I-At large): As long as the board of directors at Whitman-Walker Clinic cooperates with the District's Committee on Health, there will be no need to ''seek subpoena powers.''
''It's when and if I feel that there's some reluctance to be forthcoming that I will seek those additional powers,'' said Catania, the chair of the health committee who in late January held a public roundtable to question the clinic's leadership and recent layoffs. ''So long as I feel there's cooperation, I feel that that would not be necessary.''
It seems Catania is getting the cooperation he seeks -- though perhaps not the substance -- through a nine-page document released by the clinic Feb. 10. In it, clinic CEO Donald Blanchon emphasizes the clinic's mission, including a commitment to the GLBT community that founded the clinic. Blanchon also says release of the document ''reaffirms our commitment despite these tough economic time.'' ...more

By CHRIS JOHNSON, Washington Blade | Feb. 19 at 2:41 PM Feb. 19 at 2:41 PM
Anti-gay conservatives are increasing their rhetoric and activities because they fear public officials are more likely than ever to act on pro-gay initiatives.
That’s the perception of at least one activist, who said he’s noticed an upswing in the ferocity of opposition to pro-gay initiatives now that social conservatives have lost power on the national stage and may be unable to stop lawmakers from approving measures like hate crimes legislation and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said opponents of gay rights are “lying and spreading misinformation in greater ways than they ever hav ...

The feature story in the March issue of the Advocate about out black comedian Wanda Sykes makes note that African Americans declaring their homosexuality have been “conspicuously absent” from magazine covers. One would think then that the nation’s leading LGBT newsmagazine would put Sykes, who gave it an exclusive interview, on its cover. Instead, a barely [...]

On Feb. 6, state Rep. Charlice Byrd (R-Woodstock) called out GSU for having experts in oral sex and male prostitution. Dr. Kirk Elifson, Dr. Mindy Stombler and Dr. Donald Reitzes, the chair of GSU’s sociology department, appeared before the Senate committee on Feb. 18 to defend their research.
Elifson is GSU’s expert on male prostitution. His research dates back to the Vietnam War, where he studied the sexual habits of American servicemen. While 90 percent visited female prostitutes, 10 percent visited male prostitutes, according to ...
