It's been a busy week for Lambda Legal's Atlanta-based Southern Regional Office. On Wednesday, the gay legal group announced it had filed a brief in support of a gay father who wants the Georgia Supreme Court to toss out a stipulation in his divorce decree that forbids him from "exposing his children to his homosexual partners and friends."
Now today, Lambda Legal announces it will represent Central Alabama Pride in the gay festival's federal lawsuit against Birmingham, Ala., Mayor Larry Langford. Last year, Langford Released Feb. 19 by an ELCA task force, the "Proposed Social Statement on Human Sexuality" and related "Rostering Recommendations" admit there is no consensus about how the Lutheran church should treat its gay members and pastors. The 20-page document recommends allowing churches and synods to make their own decisions on non-celibate gay pastors, a change from the current ban. Conservative Christians packed a state Senate hearing Feb. 18 by recruiting middle and high school-aged children to fight a bill that would allow Georgia counties to vote on Sunday alcohol sales.
Roughly 40 teens wearing stickers proclaiming their allegiance to the coalition of “No Sunday Sales” attended the Senate Regulated Industries & Utilities Committee hearing on SB 16. The bill would allow a county-level referendum where residents would decide if they should expand their county’s alcohol sales to Sunday.
