The NAACP announced support on Monday for California's supreme court to invalidate Prop. 8, the November ballot initiative that constitutionally banned same-sex marriage in California.
Marriage equality took center stage twice at Sunday night's Academy Awards. Both Best Actor winner Sean Penn and Milk scribe Dustin Lance Black pleaded for equal rights during their acceptance speeches.

The White House announced Monday that President Obama has appointed a gay man to serve as its official spokesperson to gay publications.

Shin Inouye was appointed last week as director of specialty media for the White House. Prior to joining the White House staff, Inouye was spokesperson for specialty media at Obama?s presidential campaign and the Presidential Inaugural Committee. He previously was a communications director for Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) and senior legislative communications associate at the D.C. legislative office for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Rhode Island lawmakers are taking up gay marriage legislation next week.

One bill being considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday would allow same-sex couples to marry in Rhode Island. Another would outright ban gay marriage and prohibit the state from recognizing same-sex couples as married.

Rhode Island law is currently silent on the issue.

A third bill before the committee would allow same-sex couples who wed out of state to get divorced in Rhode Island. That bill was inspired by a 2007 state Supreme Court decision that blocked ...

As the recession continues to take a toll on non-profits, the Human Rights Campaign is taking steps to cut costs. 

Brad Luna, an HRC spokesperson, said the organization has proposed to its unionized workers a way to tackle ?these economic times.? He declined to discuss details of the proposal.

?We?re a union shop, so therefore we have to have conversations with them about these economic times,? he said. ?And they ?re looking at it and seeing if there?s ways we can work together. Other than that, the details of it, I really can?t go into.?

Luna would not say whether any decisions have been made to freeze or cut employee salaries at the organization.
