March Forth on March Fourth Wednesday, March 4 is the day before the California Supreme Court hears oral arguments on the validity of Prop 8. That evening, we’ll stand together and send a unified message to our fellow Californians, including the Supreme Court Justices, that individual liberties like the right to marry are guaranteed by the [...]
Blender Dan M. sent me a link to this event from over the weekend that sounded like a hoot.
Hundreds of gay and straight Utahns gathered at the State Capitol Saturday for "Buttars-Palooza," an event to counter a controversial statement by State Senator Chris Buttars regarding homosexuals. In a January interview, Buttars had compared the gay community to radical Muslims and said the gay movement was "probably the greatest threat to America." The event borrowed its name from " Lollapalooza," a music festival, and included music and dancing of its own.
Dan also points to the group's Facebook page, that features photos of people with signs like "Buttars makes the melting pot greasy," and "If ignorance is bliss, Buttars must be orgasmic!"

Equality California has released a 30-second ad that it says it will start airing on television stations around the state to educate Californians about the history of the discrimination against LGBT individuals. Watch the ad here:

My commentary, an overall grade and a full transcript of the ad below the fold...
What do you notice is missing? Yup. The words "Gay" or "Lesbian" or "Bisexual" or "Transgendered." It is narrated by someone who sounds like an African-American male, which is an interesting choice. There's no transcript offered by Equality California but here's my attempt:
Persecuted.

Arrested.

Beaten.

And still denied equal rights.

But for every Jerry Falwell, there's a Harvey Milk.

For every voice of hatred, a million voices for change.

Because Equality is our right.

Join the fight.
Overall, I think as the first ad of a statewide group to convince people to join Equality California I think it's a bit weak. If the goal is to inform people that gay people have been historically discriminated against, I think it does a better job but should have actual citations in it. I think the true reason for the ad is to promote Equality California's main piece of legislation for 2009, which is to enact a "Day of Significance" on May 22 as "Harvey Milk Day" in California. It doesn't do a good job of that either. Overall Grade: B-.
The cold weather must have resulted in a few fundie buses breaking down, but the real story is the difference in the head count. (N&O):
More than a 1,000 people, most of them from Baptist churches across the state, stood on the ice-covered lawn outside the legislative building in Raleigh today to demand that state legislators give them a chance to vote on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

The rally, sponsored by a Winston-Salem group called Return America, featured two nationally acclaimed conservative Christian pundits who described a breakdown of society should gay couples be allowed to marry. They then urged those attending to knock on their legislators' doors and demand action.

"Let them feel the heat until they see the light," said David Barton, founder of WallBuilders, a ministry devoted to educating Americans about the country's moral and religious foundation.

Check out the comments. However, WRAL-TV says the police give a different headcount.
Capitol Police estimated between 3,00 and 4,000 people were at a rally sponsored by Christian conservative group Return America in downtown Raleigh Tuesday.
That's a huge difference; they can't both be right. Here are the comments there.
In a bold move, both chambers of the California Legislature have voted in favor of resolutions supporting the challenge to Prop 8.
Did you notice last night that both Sean Penn & Dustin Lance were able to use their Oscar acceptance speeches to continue the ongoing conversation on LGBT rightere able to use their Oscar acceptance speeches to continue the ongoing conversation on LGBT rights, and in particular, marriage equality? This is certainly not the first time that an award winner has turned their acceptance speech into a political platform - In 2007, [...]
