The White House says President Barack Obama has begun consulting his top defense advisers on how to lift a ban on gays serving openly in the military.

But the administration won't say how soon that might happen or whether a group of experts will be commissioned to study the issue in-depth, as some Democrats have suggested.

The move enables Obama to say he's making good on his campaign promise to reverse the law, but doesn't lock him into doing so anytime soon. Mary Ritchie, a Massachusetts State Police trooper, has been married for almost five years and has two children. But when she files her federal income tax return, she's not allowed to check the "married filing jointly" box.

That's because Ritchie and her spouse, Kathleen Bush, are a gay couple, and the federal Defense of Marriage Act makes them ineligible to file joint tax returns.

Three men are facing hate-crime charges after allegedly throwing rocks into a gay bar, injuring two men, police said.

According to witnesses, one man held open the door to Robert's Lafitte bar Sunday night while the other two hurled two rocks, one of them weighing 4 pounds, into the bar. The rocks were apparently being used as doorstops.

A 57-year-old man was treated at a hospital for a gash on the back of his head. Another man was hit in the jaw but refused treatment.
