Gay News Magazine Headlines (T24T-2)

Feature Story: If you talk about contemporary dance in Washington, dancer and choreographer Helanius Wilkins is bound to enter the conversation. Since 2001, his EDGEWORKS Dance Theater has steadily been gaining momentum, as he and his all-male company of mostly African-American dancers follow a mission to smash stereotypes.
"We come in as men, men who are dancing, men who are making an impact through dance," Wilkins explains. "We're not coming in as gay men or straight men. We're coming to it just as men first. That's where the work starts from. I think there's something very special about starting from that place."

That male-centric description may seem limiting to some, but it has certainly not limited Wilkins, who specifically dubbed EDGEWORDS a contemporary-dance "theater," rather than a "company," in that it allows him and others the opportunity to express themselves beyond dance. ...more

The waiting room at the Max Robinson Center has been named the ''Barbara A. Chinn Waiting Area.'' And the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center now has a ''Mary L. Bahr Public Benefits Room'' and a ''Dr. Patricia D. Hawkins Medical Adherence Room.''

Gauge: When Siva ''Shiva'' Subbaraman first got involved in the D.C. GLBT community in the 1980s, things were a lot different for Asian/Pacific Islanders.
''When I used to go to some of the early meetings in the '80s, all I saw was white women,'' Subbaraman says. ''And I couldn't identify with the white lesbians from that time. I couldn't understand how to put together those two pieces of my identity: being South Asian and being queer. So I left it alone.''
But it wasn't long before Subbaraman, who came to the District from India for graduate studies, found herself involved in KhushDC, a gay group, and Asian/Pacific Islander Queer Sisters (APIQS). She would go on to serve as Asian representative for the Mayor's Committee on LGBT Affairs from 1999 to 2002, before working as the associate director at the Office of LGBT Equity at the University of Maryland. And in August 2008, Subbaraman accepted a position at Georgetown University as the first director of the Catholic institution's LGBTQ Resource Center. ...more

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
The gay owner of Universal Gear clothing and apparel store at 14th and Q Streets, N.W., has expressed concern that D.C. police have yet to identify or arrest members of the same group of young men who have repeatedly stolen merchandise totaling about $4,000 from his store over the past 18 months.

Owner David Franco, who moved the upscale store from 17th Street to 14th Street in 2007, said the rash of "snatch-and-run" robberies remains unsolved despite the fact that he has turned over to police high-resolution video surveillance footage of a number of the young male suspects taken from cameras installed inside the store. ...

The official bulletin says a new law will allow the partnership if both partners are at least 18 years old. The bill w as approved by parliament in April and signed by President Laszlo Solyom earlier this week.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)
New York's Assembly is expected to pass a bill this week legalizing same-sex marriage, while Democrats in the Senate are working furiously to get enough votes to turn the proposal into law.

A spokesman for state Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith won't comment on any progress in his chamber. Smith needs just one vote from an upstate Democrat or downstate Republican to pass the measure.

Smith says he won't bring the bill to a vote this session if he isn't sure it will pass. All 30 Republicans in the 62-seat chamber and at least one conservative Democrat have said they oppose the same-sex marriage proposal.
