Attorneys for a minister seeking a voter referendum to overturn the District's same-sex marriage recognition law are asking a D.C. judge to suspend the July 6 deadline for meeting all the referendum's requirements, including the submission of 21,000 valid petition signatures.

The attorneys representing Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. of Hope Christian Church in Maryland and six others who proposed the referendum told D.C. Superior Court Judge Judith Retchin at a hastily called hearing June 18 that their clients face an unfair litany of requirements to place the marriage law on the ballot. A vote on same-sex marriage legislation could occur in the New York Senate as early as this week, but lobbying from constituents is necessary to ensure passage of the legislation, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

Marty Rouse, HRC's national field director, said the organization is "hopeful that the bill will come up to be passed this week. "

"We believe that there's a strong likelihood that a vote on marriage is imminent and could happen as early as Wednesday," he said.

Rouse said if the bill comes to a vote that he's "confident that we have a very good chance of having a positive vote."

Oregon Attorney General John Kroger said Monday there's no credible evidence that Portland Mayor Sam Adams broke the law in his 2005 relationship with a teenager. Adams, who is openly gay, has admitted he lied while campaigning for mayor about his relationship with Beau Breedlove. But Adams denies that the two were involved in a sexual relationship before Breedlove was 18. Kroger issued a report on his investigation into whether Adams had sexual contact with Breedlove before he turned 18, which would have been a misdemeanor.
