Combined Gay News Headlines (T5T-1)

On Thursday, India's Supreme Court signaled it would hear an appeal to this month's Delhi High Court ruling that decriminalized same-sex sex. Striking down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (which concerns itself with "carnal intercourse against the order of nature"), Delhi gave gays the legal (and human?) right to be intimate with each [...]
Could a Don't Ask Don't Tell stop-gap measure hit the U.S. Senate as early as Tuesday? If reports out of New York's Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's office are to be believed, then yes. On the heels of the Ft. Worth gay bar raid comes a similar Stonewall-esque police dump on a Dallas gay bar that has all the markings of a repeat incident. You would think with all the criticsm lodged its way after sending one man to the hospital during the Ft. Worth raid on June 28, [...]
OK, so I should probably start off by apologizing to the mass of women who just went shoe shopping for that perfect gladiator sandal who I am probably about to offend. I just couldn’t stop myself from opening my big mouth on the subject of my unrelenting hatred for gladiator sandals (come on, I’m half [...]
First of all,Iwant you to know that I’m no expert when it comes to financial issues.I’m writing this blog because I hope that there is someone out there that might find this information useful.I don’t have many bills, but the ones that I do have never seem to go down.I always try to pay a little [...]
Today the U.S. Senate is holding hearings for Sonia Sotomayor. Expect the usual wingnuttery focusing on her "wise Latina" comment from years ago. Republicans are saying (at least I heard on NPR this AM) that they won't block the nomination, but just make a stink during the hearings about her "liberal agenda." Who gives a flying bleep? She would be replacing a liberal justice, David Souter, so the political balance on the court doesn't change if she's seated. This is going to be GOP theatre at its most pathetic.

Aside from the hearings, this is an open thread for you to blogwhore, drop links and catch up with news from other Blenders.

Not too long ago I blogged about the actor on The Young and the Restless, Chris Engel, who walked off of the set when he was told his character was going to have a same-sex romance storyline coming his way.

Now we have an even more ridiculous walk-off, this time on One Live to Live. Patricia Mauceri, who plays the mother of one of the principal male characters on the show, Cristian, refused to act in a storyline that portrays her character as accepting of homosexuality because she is Latina.

"OLTL" was taping scenes in late-June concerning roommates Cristian, Layla and Fish. (They'll air in September.) Cristian and Layla suspect that sweet cop Fish is gay, but aren't sure how to approach him about it. So they buy a book about how to tell if you&a mp;#39;re gay and plan to give it to him.

Cristian's mom, Carlotta, was supposed to find the book and assume Cristian is gay. Her reaction was scripted to be very accepting and even amused, citing his love of art and fondness for going shirtless as signs she should have recognized.

But Mauceri, who has played diner purveyor Carlotta Vega for 14 years, refused to play the story as written, saying a Latina mother would not be so accepting. Rather, Mauceri rewrote the scenes to make Carlotta confused and troubled, and submitted them to "OLTL" execs.

"That's not the story we're telling," responded an exec.

And so the soap execs brought in another actress, Saundra Santiago (I remember her from Miami Vice), who didn't have a problem with the part.

I understand Mauceri's point that there is a problem with homophobia in segments of thof the religious, culturally conservative Latino community, but OLTL is not a documentary -- soaps deal with real-life issues, but they also deal in evil twins, demonic possessions, rampant multiple personality disorder cases, baby swapping and all sorts of other BS all the time. The fact of the matter is that in this particular case, it would be refreshing to see some modeling out there -- that not every Latino family is full of raging homophobes.

Considering the sparse acting opportunities out there today, you'd think that Mauceri, who has been on the show for years, would just suck it up and play the storyline out and move on to the next plot. I'm not sure that the dwindling soap shops (Guiding Light's the next one to bite the dust), are going to look favorably upon Mauceri if she's going to walk regarding something this minor in the overall scheme of things.

Well what the f*ck do you know...

Swearing increased pain tolerance in a small study of college students published online Sunday in the journal NeuroReport.

It also increased heart rate and decreased perceived pain -- signs of a "fight-or-flight" response that may help mitigate actual pain, according to Richard Stephens of Keele University in Staffordshire, U.K.

"If people experience the emotion of fear to a significant degree ... their pain tolerance increases," Stephens said.

That's just the damned thing I've ever heard... ;)
