The former Miss California who sparked controversy after expressing her personal opposition to same-sex marriage said Friday she's "proud" of her comments on the marriage issue.

The Obama administration is again defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act while continuing to call for its legislative repeal in a new brief filed in response to an activist group's lawsuit against the law.

A 19-year-old D.C. man charged in the beating death of Tony Randolph Hunter, a local gay man, pleaded guilty Thursday to one charge of misdemeanor assault as part of a plea bargain arrangement offered by prosecutors.
Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's office made no concessions to defendant Robert Hannah, such as promising to recommend a lenient sentence for the simple assault charge, according to spokesperson Benjamin Friedman.
