As The World Burns
I was having a conversation with a few friends recently. There seemed to be a commonality among the sentiment. At one point I asked Joe (not his real name) why he didn’t listen to radio show xyz anymore. Joe told me “I got tired of listening to the queens bitching all the time”. At another point I was talking with Joan (not her real name) who was disappointed her songs weren’t more popular. She poured her heart into her songs, trying to send important messages in them.
The commonality in these two discussions involves complacency and inaction. Like the ostrich it seems many simply wish to bury their collective heads in the sand. Of course they know there are problems in our world. Evidently they expect someone else to solve the problems for them.
In the meantime they don’t want to hear about the problems or solutions. However, they won’t have any problem taking advantage of improvements that come their way due to the actions of others. They also won’t feel any guilt for their lack of participation in bringing about the improvements.
Quite frankly this type of attitude is self-destructive and it’s the reason so many things have gone astray in our world. If a large part of the populace is complacent, they are providing license for extreme abuse and neglect.
As the old saying goes ‘the squeaky wheel gets the grease’.
If someone hit you in the face would you do nothing? Chances are you would take some action, even if it were simply notifying the authorities.
As our net incomes decrease, our homes taken away, our jobs disappear, our leaders lie to us and our rights are trampled upon so many simply do nothing. Your silence is the same as saying it’s okay. It’s okay to tax the hell out of us, take away our homes, our jobs and rights. And, of course, by all means, it’s okay for our leaders to lie to us!
As the world burns so many simply sit and watch instead of joining the fire brigade.

Christian Bigots Abound and Harm Humanity again and again and again
It’s kind of like punishing a child. When sent to their room, the child’s screams are loudest just before entering their room.
We all know Christianity and the bible was used to kill millions of people worldwide that would not convert to Christianity.
We all know Christianity and the bible was used to justify slavery. The bible even tells you what countries you may obtain slaves from and describes a slave owners’ relationship with *his slave plus more (*there weren’t any female slave owners since females were subservient to man).
We’ve all seen Christianity and the bible used to justify a woman’s second-class status.
We’ve all seen Christianity and the bible used to justify racial discrimination.
Now we are seeing Christianity and the bible used to justify LGBTQI second-class status.
Most activity of this type stems from what many of us would call the religious right (who, by the way, are always wrong).
It was the religious right that supported slavery (while the religious left, like the Quakers, fought to end it). It was the Bible belt that enforced Jim Crow laws, and it was the religious right that opposed integration and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Jerry Falwell used exactly the same language against integration that he later used against the LGBTQI community.
It was the religious right that opposed the Equal Rights Amendment, and as a result, women still earn less than men in many places.
As we can see, history clearly shows it is the religious right that has always been on the wrong side of every issue. From the religious leaders who opposed Jesus, to the Salem witch trials, to slavery, to integration, to interracial marriage, and now to Gay rights and marriage.
In every case, they claimed to have scripture on their side.
Now we see the worldwide head count of Christians diminishing. Of course this is to be expected. After all, time and time again the christian right has proven itself closed minded, biased, bigoted and unable to progress.
We live in a day where politicians think they can win by outing another candidate. Of course we have seen that backfire in most cases. In fact, the opposite effect is achieved. The bigot is simply exposing his bigotry.
We’ve all seen this type of logic before. Liars think everyone is a liar, in order to justify their own lying. These bigots are in the same boat. They feel everyone else is a bigot. This provides them 'justification' for their bigotry.
Human beings evolve and learn. The Christian right (always wrong) insults our intelligence by attempting to control us with their lies and attacks.
Unfortunately, for them, history along with current actions show us Christianity and the bible continue to be misued and abused by the bigots and small minded.
The sad truth is they are doing so much harm to Christianity. You’d think the 'good Christians' would stand up and speak loudly. Some do, but most don’t. I hope 'good Christians' can step up to the plate as the Quakers did so many years ago.
I say to those 'good Christians' who are remaining silent in the background that your religion is in need of your assistance. As the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated "silence is betrayal".
Now we see the vocal right side of Christianity is the wrong side. If the good side of Christianity doesn’t stand up, Christianity will continue it’s journey into insignificance.
Silence = Death
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out.

GayTalk Live Features Gay Uganda Blog Author on Jan 2 2010
Tom, from GayTalkRadio.org recently spoke with the author of GayUganda.BlogSpot.com on GayTalk Live, and will broadcast it this coming Saturday at Noon PT.
GayTalk Live is a new segment for the new year. GayTalk Live will air on Saturdays at 3 PM ET, Noon PT (-8 GMT). GayTalk Live hopes to be an interactive event. We will have, as always, a live chat. However, GayTalk Live will also accept your phone calls.
Our first show will air a exclusive impromtu interview with the author of GayUganda.BlogSpot.com. He has tirelessly been a fountain of information regarding the kill-the-gays legislation in Uganda, at his own risk. For various reasons the impromtu interview is pre-recored. Therefore, to my knowledge, the author of GayUganda will not be avilable on the show.
GayTalk Live will be available by podcast after the broadcast. Subscribe to GayTalkRadio on iTunes.
If you don't use iTunes you will be able to access all past episodes on the GayTalk Live showpage.

Homelessness, Kalamazoo, The District of Columbia, Christmas, Obamaville and love
In a conversation a few weeks back I heard these words; “I’m going to wait until after the first of the year for my advertising campaign”. Not that I have a degree in marketing but I told them they should take advantage of the Christmas season instead of waiting. I also said, “you know after the New Year everyone starts worrying about taxes”.
So I thought I should take my own advice and take advantage of the holiday ‘love’.
Just a brief side thought. Does the population in general show more love during the holidays? I think so. Which brings to question, why? Why do we tone down the love during the non-holiday time?
I can hear some one saying “We still love the same, we just don’t show it”, or something like “We can’t afford to give gifts all year round”, etc.
Anyhow, getting back on track.
For some reason in my daily cyber-travels today I seemed to run across many articles related to homelessness.
I read about a tent city in Colorado named Obamaville. They had a very large commercially produced banner out front. (article)
In recent news we’ve heard how The District of Columbia has signed off on marriage equality (article). Prior to the passing of the new law the Catholic Church (in D.C.) stated it would discontinue services to the homeless if the law passed (article). So far the Catholic Church has lied once again!
However, over in Kalamazoo, Michigan the story is a little bit different. In recent news we heard how Kalamazoo, Michigan passed a gay rights ordinance (article). Today I read that three churches in Kalamazoo are opting out on helping the homeless (article).
Here we are living in one of the richest nations in the world and we have homeless?
In case you’re brave enough to look into the face of homelessness here are some great places to start:

Superiority Texas Style: Lesbian Tops Straight Man (Gene Locke)
In the recent race for mayor of Houston, Texas it boiled down to a male lawyer and a lesbian.
Gene Locke is the male lawyer who tried every dirty trick he could to trash Annise Parker. Gene Locke focused on the fact that Annise Parker is an open and proud lesbian. His campaign spent many thousands of dollars trying to drive home this fact, in hopes that would be enough.
Hey Gene, evidently Houston citizens aren't as bigotted as you!
In my dreams I hope that people were able to see being Lesbian has nothing to do with one's ability to perform a job. But sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if it has more to do with the fact Gene Locke is a lawyer.
But no matter what the reason, Gene Locke (a straight man - we presume) was topped by Annise Parker (a lesbian).
I hope she used a really big strap on.

Homosexuals, Uganda, Rick Warren, Rowan Williams and finger pointing
Years ago we’d often hear “a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty”.
Most of us know that is no longer the case for the general citizenry of our world. In fact, it would seem the opposite is true “guilty until proven innocent”.
Of course, this is unless you’re a politician, rich or know the right people; in other words, if you are influential.
I exhibit, for an example, the current issue in Uganda. You know the issue about them passing a law making homosexuality a capital crime punishable by death. It even extends to the bizarre point of jailing citizens for knowing a homosexual without reporting them to officials.
All of a sudden we have media outlets pointing fingers at the influential for remaining silent on the Uganda issue.
Of course this is a religious based issue and much of the finger pointing is aimed that direction. The finger pointing is valid.
When the Rick Warren’s, Rowan William’s and countless other religious figures remain silent on humanity it speaks volumes about religion. Indeed it shows a side of religion which is not compassionate or loving!
For some reason, despite historical record, people seem to think religion is guiltless.
By their silence, the religious are clearly chanting Death to Homosexuals.
Stop and think for a moment about the holocaust. Don’t think for a minute there weren’t people killed for being homosexual, who were not homosexual.
In other words, once you approve of mob rule you open the door. Then a pointing of the finger becomes something much more!

The Castro, Harvey Milk and Uncle Donald
If you’ve seen the movie ‘Milk’ then you probably know where ‘The Castro’ is and who Harvey Milk was. But I wouldn’t be surprised if most of you have never heard of Uncle Donald.
I was in my twenties and heard a friend say he was going to San Francisco. My friend seemed excited about going there, but also about meeting someone named Uncle Donald.
So I did a tad bit of research and found a website (www.TheCastro.net) created by Uncle Donald. On the site it mentioned how he moved from New York to The Castro in the late 60’s or early 70’s. Uncle Donald is also a photographer and has many photos from the 70’s on the website.
So I decided to email him and ask him if he recommended San Francisco now. He responded with the fact that there are many gay friendly cities now (it was 25 years ago when I had this email conversation). Uncle Donald also told me something to the effect of; “how can you continue to live in such negative environment?” (I lived in San Antonio, Texas at that time).
3 or 4 years ago I emailed Uncle Donald again to let him know I had moved to Seattle. He remembered our email communication from years earlier. He also told me how he had to move out of The Castro, saying “big commercial interest moved in to The Castro”. Uncle Donald told me he had moved out to the suburbs.
Uncle Donald’s website www.TheCastro.net is a tribute to ‘The Castro’ of days gone by. It's also a tribute to Uncle Donald. Thank you Uncle Donald.
It’s a piece of history, my history, your history; our history!

US Constitution, Article VI, No Religious Test for public office
We’ve heard many examples of “officials” refusal to issue “gay” marriage licenses based on religious beliefs. I’m talking about areas where same-sex marriage is legal.
I’ve always wondered if these “officials” ever refused a marriage license due to divorce, different religious beliefs or because the applicants were atheists?
Since a marriage license is a legal state/government document the “official” is an officer of the state/government.
Of course, all state and government officials are legally bound by the United States Constitution.
According to article six of the United States Constitution:
Article VI
All debts contracted and engagements entered into, before the
adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under
this Constitution, as under the Confederation.
This Constitution, and the
laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all
treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States,
shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be
bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary
notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the
members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial
officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by
oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall
ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the
United States.
In other words no religious test was required for these
“marriage officials” to take office.
As you can see, that would be against the law as stated above in the United States Constitution. It would be illegal.
Yet some of these “officials” chose to impose a religious test on those who seek to obtain a legal document, which, in these cases, is their legal right.
Divorce is clearly against Christian beliefs. One must wonder why we haven’t heard about divorced applicants being refused a marriage license.
It’s obvious they are being selective in the enforcement of these religious beliefs. Of course that means they have “crossed the line”; the dividing line between “religious beliefs” and “personal bias”.
In this case, as with so many religious issues these days, it becomes apparent the later of the two is the most likely suspect.
In the bigger picture, why are any of our state/government representatives using religion as a arguing point for/against issues?
Since requiring religious affiliation to hold office would be unconstitutional, constitutionally religion falls under the umbrella of personal beliefs. Of course most of us don’t need the constitution to tell us that.
But we must take note of the fact this is in the constitution at all.
Since religion and the bible are about truth and love, one must wonder why it be rejected as a requirement to hold public office?
Obviously the wisdom of our founding fathers was based on their life experiences.
As we see religion attempting to creep into politics we must remember, history forgotten is often history repeated.

VIGIL to Remember Gay Teen Jorge Lopez Mercado
Stop the Slaughter
A Vigil will be held in Philadelphia on Friday evening, November 20th to remember 19-year-old Jorge Lopez Mercado. Lopez, a Puerto Rican native was found partially burned, decapitated and with arms and legs dismembered, on the side of the road near his home town Caguas, Puerto Rico on Saturday, November 14th.
The Vigil will be held at the Church of St. Luke and The Epiphany, 330 South 13th Street in Philadelphia from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organizations, activists and allies are invited. The Vigil will include the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus, Gloria Casarez, LGBT Liaison to Mayor Nutter, Cynthia Vasquez, youth activist at the Gay and Lesbian Latino AIDS Education Initiative (GALAEI), and Malcolm Lazin , Executive Director of Equality Forum.
There were 29 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) hate crime murders in the United States in 2008.
“We must stop the homophobic slaughter,” stated Malcolm Lazin , Executive Director of Equality Forum. “Since Matthew Shepard’s murder in 1998, there have been over 16,000 gay hate crimes, and on average, about 1,450 GLBT hate crimes per year.”
Police have identified a suspect in the murder of Jorge Lopez Mercado. According to Puerto Rican activists, gay hate crimes in Puerto Rico are not prosecuted.
“We call on US Attorney General Holder to investigate and prosecute in federal court this horrific crime,” stated Lazin. “The decapitation and dismemberment of Jorge Lopez Mercado reminds America that we need to eliminate homophobia in our schools, communities and culture.”
There will also be a Vigil in New York City on Sunday, November 22nd. “It is our hope that communities around the nation will hold Vigils to remember Jorge and that his memory will be a call to conscience,” said Lazin.
Equality Forum is a national and international GLBT civil rights organization with an educational focus. Equality Forum coordinates GLBT History Month, produces documentary films, undertakes high impact initiatives and presents annually the largest national and international GLBT civil rights forum.

GayTalkRadio.org standardizes and improves communications
Now it’s easier to contact GayTalkRadio.
We have standardized the naming scheme “across the board”. Of course this means there have been a few changes.
With these changes, it doesn’t matter if you use Yahoo, Gmail, Windows Live or Skype you may contact us using the name GayTalkRadio on all these services.
Unfortunately these changes required us to change both the phone numbers for GayTalkRadio.
The new phone number for our 24/7 voicemail system is 909-7GayGay (909.742.9429).
The new phone number for our live shows is 301-TalkGay (301.825.5429).
As always the voicemail system also has the ability to call you, saving you any toll charges. Simply visit www.GayTalkRadio.org and scroll towards the bottom of the page. You will see a “Call Me” graphic to click on.
Your comments, suggestions and input are welcome.
As a new feature we can send and receive SMS messages through our voicemail box. So if you wish to “text message” GayTalkRadio you may now do so using the voicemail system number (909.742.9429).
As always, we can easily air the voicemail messages on GayTalkRadio. Therefore we still offer free event announcements on GayTalkRadio. If you have an upcoming event, leave us a message about it on the voicemail system (up to 3 minutes in length) and we will air it on GayTalkRadio for free. Please note GayTalkRadio will not air incomplete information or anti-gay content.
My primary email address has not changed. As before, feel free to contact me directly by email tom@GayTalkRadio.org
Just a little insider “side note”; there is talk about a new show or two coming to GayTalkRadio soon.
