North Carolina is no longer the state that repeatedly sent Jesse Helms to the U.S. Senate.
Jim Neal, an openly gay man running for the U.S. Senate in the southern state, vows this is the case. He’s counting on a changed state and an electorate eager for even more change to send him to Washington in place of Elizabeth Dole.
“I’ll tell you a good story,” Neal said during a telephone interview seven days before the May 6 primary.
Neal next recalled meeting a young HIV/AIDS activist at a recent benefit. The activist introduced herself. She said she supported his candidacy for the Senate. And she mentioned that her grandfather once served in the U.S. Senate.
Who was that? Neal inquired.
Jesse Helms, she answered.
