Unleashed dog led to slaying at park, court told

by Rachel Pomerance
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia: A bucolic park where people, but not dogs, can roam free was the scene for years of skirmishes between two of its patrons that ended last year with one of their deaths.

But whether Charles Martin Coats, 57, of Stone Mountain stabbed William Scott Carr, 50, of Snellville last year to defend himself or was motivated by anti-gay sentiments is yet to be determined.

"Get your blankety-blank dogs on a leash!" Coats told Carr on one occasion, said prosecuting attorney David Keeton. The two traded insults, with Carr telling Coats to "mind his own business." Carr and his male partner were nervous about Coats, and kept a copy of a police report filed over one of their tiffs in their vehicle's glove compartment should there be another run-in at Gwinnett's Yellow River Park where paths occasionally crossed.

The killer was aquitted. This is an outrage!! My heart goes out to the victim's family whom not only had to suffer through the cruel and senseless death of their loved one, but now have to live with this injustice.

Last news I saw said the trial started on the 26th.

It would deffinately be an outrage (if this is true).

The real injustice was that with all the EVIDENCE and FACTs that Mr. Coat's had to serve one night in jail more less one and a half uears. I think that gwinnett county schould have to pay the attorney fees since they did nothing to resolve this before it got so escalated. Lets look at the facts who btoke the law first. Oh yes that would be the leash law. Then who broke the law by stalking oh yes that was Mr. Carrs who showed up in his truck pointing like he was going to shoot Mr. Coats at his home. Per the police report. And who ultimately broke the law attacking someone oh yes again Mr. Carrs from the back. Mr. Coats was walking away when He was attacked. This was never disputed by the lover of Mr. Carrs. Sounds to me the victim was Mr. Coats. GAet the facts straight!!!

It's really scary that some people think breaking the lease law and pointing your finger (if this is even true) is a valid reason to plunge a knife into someone's throat and then leave the scene. It is my understanding that Mr. Carr's partner did not dispute what Mr. Coats said about being attacked from the back because the partner had been walking away and didn't see the killing. (It happened that fast) It is also my understanding that it had been three years since their little feud. Mr. Coats is not the victim here. He is alive and a free man. Although I could dispute much more evidence and facts,I won't argue about this anymore. I don't want to start a feud; the trial is over and done with. I just wanted to express my sympathy for Mr. Carr's family and friends.
