Momentum gaining for gay marriage
by Nina Wu
The Star Bulletin
There is a quiet, but steadily growing movement to reintroduce the legalization of same-sex marriage at the Hawaii Legislature next year.
California's Supreme Court ruling on May 15 only makes the movement stronger here, according to Alan Spector, co-chair of the Family Equality Coalition. The May ruling became effective June 16, but still could be overturned by a constitutional amendment if it gets on the California ballot for November.
"The time has absolutely come to double our efforts, and re-engage the public as well as the Hawaii Legislature on this issue," said Spector.

60 people arrested for disrupting Bulgaria's gay pride march
from FOCUS Information Agency
Sofia - Bulgarian police arrested 60 people Saturday opposed to Bulgaria's first gay pride march after they tried to storm the small group of about 100 marchers in the capital Sofia, AFP reports, citing the interior ministry.
Security concerns had already forced organisers and municipal authorities to change the route of the march twice and deploy a large number of police to prevent clashes.
"Bulgaria is in the EU now. People have to accept us like normal human beings. We are not criminals," 51-year-old German engineer Peter Moews who lives in Sofia told AFP.
"Hostility comes from misunderstanding. Most people think that we are all feminine and wear women dresses but this is not true," he added.

Bolthouse Farms donated $100,000 to ban gay marriage
Nick Langewis over at PageOneQ tells us a popular juice company is anti-gay and supports the ban on gay marriage in California.
Bolthouse Farms donated $100,000 to ban gay marriage in California.
William Bolthouse, with proceeds from the sale of his company's organic juices in stores such as Whole Foods, gave the money to the Alliance Defense Fund, which has been active in the California courts in attempting to overturn the recent ruling, and in opposing a new suit, filed by Equality California, arguing that rules for revising the state's constitution were not properly followed in putting the initiative on the ballot.

Video: Gay History - New York - The First March
As a remebrance to Stonewall, which started on June 28, 1969, The Center has been involved in creating some wonderful videos.
The First March in New York is a great video which talks with people who were there.
One stated "We called it the first RUN". Pointing to the volatile environment.
Another notes, "it wasn't a parade, it was a political march".

Lambda Legal Sues Florida Hospital for Mistreatment of Deceased Lesbian’s Family
(Miami, Florida, June 25, 2008) — Today Lambda Legal announced a lawsuit against Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for the negligent and outrageous treatment towards the family of Lisa Pond, a lesbian whose partner of 18 years and their three children were not allowed to see her as she slipped into a coma and died.
"The treatment that Janice and her children received was outrageous, unethical and discriminatory," said Beth Littrell, Staff Attorney in Lambda Legal's Southern Regional Office based in Atlanta. "Having your worst family nightmare compounded by mistreatment by hospital staff is more than anyone should have to endure."
Beth Littrell, Staff Attorney in Lambda Legal's Southern Regional Office in Atlanta is lead counsel on the case for Lambda Legal. She is joined by co-counsel Donald J. Hayden of Baker & McKenzie, LLP.

Australia: ‘Faggot’ fights back
from Queensland Pride
A gay Bowen Hills man has launched an anti-vilification case against a group of fellow Housing Commission tenants he claims have repeatedly called him homophobic names within earshot of other neighbours.
Wayne Draper, 58, told Queensland Pride the campaign against him and a fellow tenant intensified after another tenant who had threatened him with a knife was transferred to another community.
Draper, who is HIV positive and also suffers cardio and vascular problems, claims he was admitted to hospital after the now-transferred neighbour allegedly sat outside his flat and threatened to “cut ya” and “knife ya, ya f*cking faggot!”

Unleashed dog led to slaying at park, court told
by Rachel Pomerance
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia: A bucolic park where people, but not dogs, can roam free was the scene for years of skirmishes between two of its patrons that ended last year with one of their deaths.
But whether Charles Martin Coats, 57, of Stone Mountain stabbed William Scott Carr, 50, of Snellville last year to defend himself or was motivated by anti-gay sentiments is yet to be determined.
"Get your blankety-blank dogs on a leash!" Coats told Carr on one occasion, said prosecuting attorney David Keeton. The two traded insults, with Carr telling Coats to "mind his own business." Carr and his male partner were nervous about Coats, and kept a copy of a police report filed over one of their tiffs in their vehicle's glove compartment should there be another run-in at Gwinnett's Yellow River Park where paths occasionally crossed.

Gay Activists to boycott gay-rights group dinner
by Wyatt Buchanan, Chronicle Staff Writer
San Francisco Chronicle
As gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people prepare to celebrate gay pride in San Francisco this weekend, many of them also are organizing a boycott and protest of the country's largest gay rights organization.
Activists plan to be on the streets during the festivities to inform people of the boycott and protest of the Human Rights Campaign's annual fundraising dinner in San Francisco next month, a major event that raises tens of thousands of dollars for the organization.
Similar actions took place at fundraising dinners in Philadelphia and New York City earlier this year.
The controversy stems from the Human Rights Campaign's decision last fall to support a bill in Congress that would bar employers from firing a person because of his or her sexual orientation. The bill, which passed the House but has stalled in the Senate, did not include the same protections for transgender people. More than 370 gay rights organizations opposed the bill for that reason.
Theresa Sparks, who is president of the San Francisco Police Commission and is transgender, said she returned an award she received from the Human Rights Campaign.
Sparks, who attended the news conference with Dufty and Ammiano, noted the contributions of transgender people to the LGBT movement. The 1969 Stonewall riots in New York that sparked the modern LGBT rights movement were promulgated by transgender people, she said.

Nancy Pelosi on Monday released a statement on San Francisco's 38th annual LGBT Pride
From Washington Blade staff reporters
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday released a statement on San Francisco's 38th annual LGBT Pride.
"In this year's Pride Month, we have much to celebrate. The California Supreme Court's historic decision recognizes that our state constitution provides for equal treatment for all of California's citizens and families. Once again, California is leading the way for the nation. I take great pride in this significant milestone, and am full of joy for the many loving couples who are formalizing their unions across our great state. I encourage California citizens to respect the Court's decision and join me in strongly opposing any ballot measure that would write discrimination into our state constitution.

GLAAD Action Alert; FX Networks' 30 days and Family Research Council
New York, NY, June 23, 2008 - The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today urged community members to contact FX Networks to express their concerns about a defamatory claim by an anti-gay activist that will appear, unchallenged, in the June 24 episode of 30 Days.
30 Days, FX Networks’ original series produced by Morgan Spurlock, "examines social issues in America by immersing individuals in a life that requires them to see the world through another’s eyes,’" according to the show’s Web site. In 2006, the series won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Reality Program for the "Gay/Straight" episode.
During the June 24 episode, entitled "Same Sex Parenting," Kati, a woman who opposes gay and lesbian parents and their families, lives for 30 days with gay parents Dennis and Thomas and their four adopted sons. The episode includes the personal stories of kids raised by lesbian and gay parents.
Regrettably, the episode also features a defamatory statement by Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council, an anti-gay activist organization, who claims: "Homosexuality is associated with higher rates of sexual promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and child sexual abuse, and those are all reasons for us to be concerned about placing children into that kind of setting." While there is no credible scientific research that backs Sprigg’s claim - and much that disputes it - the episode presents his assertion as if it were fact and offers no credible social science experts or child health authorities to challenge Sprigg’s assertion. Indeed, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, the Child Welfare League of America, and many other child health and social services authorities who support parenting by qualified lesbian and gay parents dispute Sprigg’s claim.
GLAAD, the Family Equality Council and Children Of Lesbians And Gays Everywhere (COLAGE) are urging their members and the community to contact FX Networks, and 20th Century Fox, to express their concerns over providing a platform for such an inaccurate, misleading claim by the Family Research Council. Community members should let FX Networks know that it is irresponsible and unacceptable to put forth such a damaging, defamatory assertion about lesbian and gay parents, and worse, refuse to include the voices of credible experts to dispute it. GLAAD, the Family Equality Council and COLAGE honor the gay and lesbian parents and their children who are featured in this episode for sharing the real stories of their lives, and especially Dennis and Thomas and their family for opening up their home and the hearts and minds of millions through their participation on 30 Days.
