NY judge: Same-sex spouse gets husband's estate
Without a will, husband would still inherit estate
NEW YORK (AP) | Feb. 4 at 12:51 PM Feb. 4 at 12:51 PM
A judge has issued New York state's first ruling that the survivor of a legal same-sex marriage is entitled to inherit a dead spouse's estate.

Manhattan Surrogate Court Judge Kristin Booth Glen ruled that J. Craig Leiby was "the surviving spouse" and sole heir of H. Kenneth Ranftle.

The judge said Leiby, 65, and Ranftle, 54, married in Montreal on June 7, 2008, after being together nearly 25 years. An obituary notice said Ranftle died of lung cancer in Leiby's arms on Nov. 1, 2008.

The head of the First District Police station said he and his officers are ready to welcome gay nightclubs Ziegfeld’s and Secrets to their new home in the Buzzard’s Point section of Southwest Washington and will take steps to secure the safety of the club’s patrons.

Commander David Kamperin said he will work with the department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit to inform the club’s employees and patrons on how to take precautions against car break-ins, the most frequently reported crime against customers of clubs in warehouse districts similar to where Ziegfeld’s/Secrets is located.

Calif. high court to hear Prop. 8 case next month
March 5 hearing scheduled
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) | Feb. 4 at 9:48 AM Feb. 4 at 9:48 AM

California's highest court will hear oral arguments early next month in legal challenges to the state's voter-approved same-sex marriage ban.

The state Supreme Court has scheduled a March 5 hearing date for oral arguments in a series of lawsuits seeking to overturn Proposition 8.

Gay couples, several local governments and Attorney General Jerry Brown maintain the ballot initiative, which passed with 52% of the vote, is unconstitutional.

If it opts to uphold the measure, the court has said it will also decide whether the 18,000 same-sex marriages performed when gay marriage was legal in California are valid.

New Hampshire legislators are mulling two very different bills -- one that would build upon the state's civil union bill to legalize gay marriage, and one that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The state's House Judiciary committee will hold a hearing on both bills Thursday, according to the Associated Press. Reverend V. Gene Robinson, the Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop, is slated to testify in favor the same-sex marriage bill sponsored by Rep. Jim Splaine. The bill that would ban gay marriage is being carried by GOP Rep. Leo Pepino.
New campaign filings released Monday revealed that more than $83 million was funneled into California's Prop. 8 fight, and that the Mormon Church gave significantly more than it originally let on.

Clarkston broadens anti-discrimination policy
Georgia city includes gay, transgender protections
By MATT SCHAFER, Southern Voice | Feb. 4 at 11:22 AM Feb. 4 at 11:22 AM
The Clarkston City Council last night unanimously approved a beefed-up version of its anti-discrimination policy that includes protections for gay and transgender city employees.

In January, the council approved a motion to discuss in a work session adding several categories to its non-discrimination policy, including sexual orientation but not gender identity.

State Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) had discussions with every council member about sexual orientation and gender identity prior to the vote, and there was no public discussion of the gay and transgender protections at the Feb. 3 meeting.

The bill comes after lengthy discussions with Lambda Legal ...
