Gay-rights group protests spitting term

Associated Press
Dallas Morning News

A gay-rights group is protesting a 35-year prison sentence given to an HIV-positive man who was convicted of spitting on a police officer, and public health officials say the risk of contracting the AIDS virus from saliva is extremely low.

Prosecutors convinced a jury this week that the man's spit constituted a deadly weapon, making the long prison term appropriate.

Willie Campbell spit into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas police officer while he was being arrested for public intoxication in 2006, the officer testified.

Campbell, 42, had been in prison twice before, making him a habitual offender subject to a sentence of at least 25 years.

Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, a gay-rights group, said the verdict could create wrong impressions about how HIV is transmitted.

Sue Ellen’s raises the (lesbian) bar with new location

Dallas: Don’t you just love that new bar smell? Fresh paint, new furniture with notes of lingering sawdust combine for olfactory excitement second only to freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Or maybe bacon.

But we digress. The new Sue Ellen’s opens tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m. with free cover and live music. And the lesbians are dancing in the streets like Hollywood was making a Desert Hearts sequel. The new incarnation of the iconic Dallas bar is kind of a “Sue Ellen’s 2.0” though. The move to the old Throckmorton Mining Company space not only makes it one of the nation’s largest lesbian bars, but one of the best gay bars anywhere. Period.

The former TMC has been de-caved and lightened up. State-of-the-art lighting and a powerful sound system will get your heart pumping as soon as you walk in the door.

Glass panes throughout the enormous space allow a fish-bowl view of the rest of the bar from almost any vantage point, whether upstairs or down. Hang out in the Lipstick Lounge and listen to the DJ spin from high above the dance floor, or walk into the soundproof Vixen Room, featuring a large stage for live music.

Once again, Sue Ellen’s has raised the lesbian bar.

Chelsea Clinton walks into a gay bar...

Two gay bars actually. Clinton campaigned for her mother at JR's and Sue Ellen's in Dallas last night. Gloria Steinem and Rob Reiner were also there to tout the former first lady to the local gay community. The crowd of mostly men at JR's went nuts when Chelsea Clinton got up on the stage.

The enthusiastic response prompted the best line of the night, from Chelsea Clinton: "I did actually have someone propose to me earlier this week although he was a Ron Paul supporter. I told him if he really loved me, he would support my mother."

Chelsea Clinton will speak to students at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth this morning. The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the Brown-Lupton Student Center at 2855 Main Drive. Chances are, she will say very similar things to what she said at other events.
