WAVERLY, IOWA: Nearly a month ago, the starting quarterback for the Wartburg College football team reportedly uttered an anti-gay slur against a classmate. With the player suspended indefinitely from competition, possible legal repercussions and ongoing publicity, some on campus hope the incident results in more inclusiveness, education and sensitivity.
"Providing a safe learning environment is of paramount importance at Wartburg College," Wartburg President Jack Ohle said in a prepared statement. "... A college must be a place for civil discourse and not accept demeaning comments or threatening behavior that devalues the humanity of an individual or a group."
The Trumpet, the campus newspaper, reported Waverly Police charged Wartburg quarterback Nick Yordi, a 19-year-old from Solon, with disorderly conduct for shouting a slur at a classmate on Oct. 9.
The charge is a simple misdemeanor and carries a penalty of up to 30 days in jail, a $625 fine or both, said Waverly Police Chief Richard Pursell.
Attorney Ryan Rasmussen entered a not guilty plea on Yordi's behalf on Oct. 15, according to court records. A trial date has been set for Nov. 29.
